Interview with a Travel CNA - KMya W.

If you’re thinking about taking the plunge into interim healthcare assignments, it’s often helpful to hear from the people who have experienced it. You’ll get a feel for what to expect, and a better understanding of the ins and outs of traveling to a new facility. Plus, travelers often have great advice to share with newbies.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with thousands of travel CNAs over the years. Below is a quick Q&A from our LeaderStat Travel CNA, K’Mya.

What made you want to become a Certified Nursing Assistant? My dream was to always take care of people. I graduated high school and a few years later, I decided to pursue my CNA license in order to jumpstart my career in the healthcare industry.

What were you doing prior to travel CNA work with LeaderStat? Before I decided to travel, I was working at a local nursing home in Alabama. I was employed there for more than three years.

Why did you decide to switch to travel work? My father passed away in 2021. Shortly after that, I knew I needed a change so looked into travel work to help keep my mind off things.

What are some must-have items to pack for a travel assignment? Before I leave for my travel assignment, I can’t leave home without my flat iron, headscarves, and my rosary that I keep beside my bed.

How long have you been with LeaderStat, and can you tell us the different cities/states you’ve completed assignments in? I’ve had the pleasure of working with LeaderStat for the past four months. I’ve completed two assignments in Pennsylvania. This month, I’m heading to a new assignment in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I look forward to going to Virginia eventually.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received from a resident while on assignment? I’ve had a patient tell me that I’m an angel sent from heaven. He had a difficult time adjusting to his new scenery, but he would always tell me how much I meant to him.

Any advice for CNAs or nurses who are considering a travel assignment for the very first time? My advice to any CNA, LPN or RN that wants to travel – go for it. Let this be the opportunity for you to meet new people, potential friends and share a bond with residents. Always watch your surroundings wherever you go and enjoy yourself.

How has the LeaderStat staff supported you during your time as a travel CNA? LeaderStat has been a big help. My recruiter and consultant specialist work together to make sure I have everything that I need. They each check in with me frequently to make sure I’m okay.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time while on assignment? In my free time, I enjoy shopping. Of course, Sephora is my go-to spot.

What’s the most challenging part of traveling? What do you find rewarding about travel work? The most challenging part about traveling is not seeing my family everyday like I’m used to doing. But, on the positive side, I get to make good money and give my mom everything she wants.

What’s the best perk about working for LeaderStat? The best part about working with LeaderStat is when I start working at a new facility find out there are other LeaderStat travelers there. We develop a friendship and look out for one another.

How has it been being on a travel assignment with your sister, Kelsie? Traveling with my sister has been nothing but fun. Who else gets to say they’re enjoying traveling with their sister/best friend?

Final thoughts or words of advice? Let this be the year you put aside your fears and decide to travel. Life is so short. Take the opportunity now to make this a year you won’t forget!
